In the Computer Room

At Narranga we are constantly delving into new and existing forms of technology. With 24 regular classes, each classroom is well-equipped with an interactive whiteboard and regular access to both laptops and iPads. We ensure our students are best prepared for the constantly evolving technological age that we live today, by being equipped with well over 250 computers – including desktops, laptops and tablets. We also have a dedicated computer lab which was built by the school P&C in 1998. Students attend lessons each week in the lab with a specialist computer teacher to improve their computer skills while incorporating technology into their learning.

Students in Kindergarten to Year 4 attend the computer room for 40 minutes per week. They learn to log on to the computer, locate and open programs, navigate through programs and exit the programs correctly. Programs that students use are chosen to support students in literacy, numeracy while incorporating theme topics from within the classrooms. Students also learn the basics of desktop publishing, internet skills and typing.

Students in Years 5 and 6 attend the Computer room for 120 minutes per week. They learn many skills, from word processing, desktop publishing, using databases, spreadsheets and general internet use. Students are presented with opportunities to work with digital photography – including taking and editing photos and designing presentations using slideshow software. Coding is another skill that is incorporated within the primary years - https://code.org/and https://scratch.mit.edu/ are two coding websites that are free and easily accessible during lessons.  These skills are vital for the demands 21st-century learners face.
