School History

Narranga Public School first opened in 1968 with 9 classes. It was established to relieve congestion at Coffs Harbour Public School, where enrolment had increased to over 1250 students.

By Easter 1969, 5 more classrooms were ready for occupation.

The school was officially opened in November 1969, with Mr Frank Willis as its first Principal. It was he who selected brown and gold as the school colours and designed the school badge with its palm and pine motif.

Additional buildings have been constructed at the school, many of which have resulted from significant funding by the Narranga Parents and Citizens group. The Library and Audio Visual Room was added in 1982; the Early Intervention Centre (which supports preschoolers with special needs) began operations in 1991; the Special Education Support Centre (a district resource) was established in 1992; the Computer Room was constructed in 1998; playground shelters were erected in 1995 and 1999; the multi-purpose demountable building arrived in 1999; and the old canteen was converted to Reading Rooms in 2000.

As the school population fluctuated over the years, demountable classrooms have been added and removed. As West Coffs Harbour's population has grown, Narranga has become the largest primary school in the district. Continuing development means that this increase in school population is likely to continue.
